What's The Difference Between Jazz And Swing?
What Is Jazz?
Jazz began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since then it has evolved and now there are many different types of Jazz. Jazz is very much on the spot spontaneous improvisation, like a musical conversation, free flow and fluid. There is a strong sense of freedom and individuality.
What Is Swing?
Swing is a type of jazz, that began in the 1920s, it is upbeat and joyful, and very danceable. Swing gets its name from the swing feel of the music, where the emphasis is on the weaker off beat, that you find you toe tapping to, and is great to dance to.
Big Band Swing
Swing is typically played by big bands. These large bands usually have 10 or more musicians and include saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section. The many instruments require more structure, but there is still often solo improvisation.
Popular Swing Vocalists
Some popular swing vocalists include Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, and even Robbie Williams.
